Three Super Simple Steps to Your Own Sacred Space

Sacred space is something I feel passionate about. If we want the numinous to show up in our lives, we must make room for it to do so. And yet, so many people I meet outsource the sacred in their lives, believing they must “go somewhere” to get the contact and connection with Spirit that they’re looking for. They visit churches, or holy sites, or beautiful places in nature and get a boost from their surroundings, only to return home to the constant grind of daily life and lose contact with the longing of their own souls.

If you want to live a life that is connected, that is whole, that is radiant … if you want to live a life that is vital, and full of purpose and meaning and soul, you must make room in your life for those things to show up. You must create space in your schedule and your home that is dedicated to that vision. You must hold that space with commitment and love.

Sacred space is a practice, a way of connecting with what I call the All That Is, with something larger than ourselves, something more vibrant. It is where we go when we are lost and need to be found. It is where we whisper our most intimate secrets into the void. It is where we ground our vision and connect with the creative potential waiting to emerge in us. It is where we touch Source and invite the divine into our homes, our lives, and our expression.

Next weekend I’ll be teaching a full two-hour class on sacred space—why it’s important, how it works, how to create and maintain it and make it work for you. But I want to leave you with a teaser, three super simple steps to create your own sacred space right now. Ready? Here they are:

1. Pick Your Space
It should be somewhere practical and easily available to you on a daily basis. If possible, choose a place that inspires you. Maybe a spot in your garden or a cozy corner of your bedroom. It can be as large as an entire room or as small as a single bookshelf.

2. Clear Your Space
I mean this energetically and physically. Make sure the area is clutter and dirt free. Use a little elbow grease if you need to. Then put on your 5-D glasses and get out your smudge wand, your singing bowl, or your essential oils. However you like to clear energy, go with it. If clearing energy is new to you, do a little research online and be willing to try something new. Once your area is totally cleansed, you can move on to the third and final step.

3. Bless Your Space
Don’t make this bit complicated. You don’t need to be ordained in anything to do this one. Simply say a prayer, state your intention, or find another way to bring some good energy into your new sacred space. What is sacred to you? Maybe you can play soothing music or meditate in your space. Add a few things that remind you of what this space is for. They might be crystals, or candles, or books that have changed your life. This place represents your unique connection to Spirit, so there is no right or wrong here.

If you want to learn more about keeping sacred space and the impact it can have on your life, I highly recommend my class next Saturday, May the 27th, at Body Mind & Soul, Sacred Space: Why it Matters & How to Create It.
